Story that touch....Wenger bemoans 'shortage' of strikers
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has bemoaned the "shortage" of "top class" strikers in world football, and says the club are "not close" to any new signings.
he Gunners have been regularly linked to the likes of Real
Madrid striker Karim Benzema and PSG forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic
throughout the summer transfer window, but Wenger continues to rubbish
such rumours.
Many onlookers, including Arsenal legend Thierry
Henry, have raised doubts over Olivier Giroud's capability to lead the
club to a Premier League title challenge, but Wenger believes there is
an overall lack of quality forwards in world football.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of Monday's clash with Liverpool, Wenger said there is a "shortage in the world" of top class strikers.
"There is a difference between financial power and the availabilty of top class players."
The Frenchman also bemoaned the transfer window, which remains open until September 1, by which time each Premier League side will have played four games already.
"When the season starts the window should be finished," Wenger said. "Simple as that. It is too big an advantage for clubs that didn't work well during the transfer window.
"The funds are there, people know that you have the resources, but the players are not available."
When asked of any imminent deals for his side, Wenger responded: "We expect, like you, but at the moment, we are not close.
"I'm more focused on developing the team and the players we have inside the club.
"I'm not against buying if it is right.
