Southampton have entered talks with Napoli over the purchase of French-Senegalese centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, according to reports.

The Saints are considering a £8.5 million move for the 24-year-old, as manager Ronald Koeman is looking to strengthen his back line before the end of the transfer window.

The versatile defender, who can also play as a right-back or in the midfield, is said to be keen on a summer move with Everton also interested in his services.

Kalidou Koulibaly scored 1 goal in 27 Serie A appearances last season, after joining Napoli from Belgian outfit Racing Genk in the summer of 2014.

The French-born of Senegalese descent represented his native country at youth level, competing at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia where France sealed a fourth-place finish, but remains eligible to play for the Teranga Lions at senior level.

Southampton will be eyeing their first win of the season when they host Everton on Saturday, after holding Newcastle to a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park in their Premier League opener.
