A closer look at Africans in the Bundesliga
In all, there are 21 players from this continent spread across the 16 teams of the Bundesliga. Only five teams (Bayer Leverkusen, Darmstadt 98, Hoffenheim 1899, Koln and VfL Wolfsburg) have no Africans in their first team squads.
Most teams have just the one African in their squads, with the exceptions being Hamburger SV, Hertha Berlin, Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen, who all have three such players on their respective rosters.
The most well-known African players in the league include Morocco’s Medhi Benatia at champions Bayern Munich, Gabonese speedster Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at Borussia Dortmund, Ivorian Salomon Kalou at Hertha Berlin and Kevin-Prince Boateng at Schalke 04, though the latter Ghanaian has been suspended by the club and his future in Germany is in doubt.
Augsburg still have Abdul Rahman Baba in their squad, though he has been strongly linked with a move to Premier League champions Chelsea.
