“I have many happy memories in football. From playing against the best players in the world in the UEFA Champions’ League to working with managers like Jose Mourinho but winning the AFCON in 2013 with Nigeria ranks as the best,” he said.
“I still remember the qualifying games like they were played yesterday. I played in six out of seven of them and the coaches said they were impressed.”
The 23-year-old said it has been difficult to watch the Super Eagles from afar, but says he will keep on working hard to try and earn a recall.
“It hurts watching the team on television. I still follow all the games. The 2014 World Cup was particularly hard as I had won the AFCON title with the boys just a year earlier,” he said.
“I supported them in all games but one part of me kept wishing I was actually in Brazil fighting for my country.
“As a professional, I will continue to work hard and play at my club and hope for the best.
“You must respect the decision of the coaches because the country is blessed with so many good players.”
Nwankwo previously played for Inter Milan, AC Parma and Cordoba.
