Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has admitted that he doesn't know why Angel Di Maria didn't join up with the squad for their pre-season tour of the United States.

Speaking after United's 3-1 win over Barcelona, Van Gaal said: "He was not on the plane. Marcos Rojo was also not on the plane. He has had a passport issue, from Angel Di Maria I don't know why. I cannot say anything."

The Argentine winger was expected to meet up with the squad this weekend, after Van Gaal said on Friday: "I expect him tomorrow. We have communicated on that. Di Maria, Marcos Rojo and Javier Hernandez have responded."

Meanwhile, L'Equipe have reported that the club have agreed a £44.5m deal with Paris Saint-Germain for the winger, after his first season at Old Trafford yielded very little in the way of end product.

United had reportedly been recoup more of the £59.7m they paid for the 27-year-old when selling him this summer, but look like they're going to take a substantial loss after reports that Di Maria is unhappy under Van Gaal's leadership.

In other "Manchester United player with 'De/Di' name linked with exit" news, Van Gaal talked about the future of David de Gea at the press conference, remarking on both the Spaniard's performance against Barcelona and his potential move to Real Madrid.

"He has showed his quality I think. The first chance was for Barcelona. When you stop the first chance, then you can score the first goal, what we have done also.

"That is always the difference in the game. Of course I do hope that David De Gea shall stay but in this world of football you never know."

The United boss also talked up the first-half performances of Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay, saying: "I think they try to do their best to do their utmost best to look for each other, sometimes too much.

"It should be better when we have a wider orientation. But I think they are always a threat. That is very important. Barcelona could not cope with the threat of Depay and Rooney. But I have to say Adnan was also a big threat to them in 30 minutes that he played as a striker. That is good to see."
