Super Eagles in the recent years has experience both rise and fall in fame. In 1994, Nigeria could boast of a formidable team of players that not only conquered Africa but went ahead and hoisted our flag for the first time in the world stage. This feat was not achieved over night, Westerhof took time and energy to build the team from 1990 when our first match in Algiers 90 was a complete humiliation to the final where Algeria could only muster a one to zero victory.
In senegal 1992, Nigeria continued her feat by defeating a senegalese team that paraded the likes of Jules Bocande, Victor Diagne and Roger Mendy. Nigeria went ahead to play in the famous semi final that saw Abedi Pele steal the show.
Eagles didnt get detered by the two failed attempts, hence Westerhof continued with his team building, this time he discovered younger and quality players like Sunday Oliseh, Austin Okocha, Emmanuel Amunike and reintroduction of Daniel Amokachi. This addition also saw the elimination of players like Friday Elaho, Friday Ekpo,Ajibade Babalade, Ademola Adeshina etc. That is team building, elimination by substitution of better and quality players and the world clearly saw the direction Eagles was heading .
This paid off and Nigeria became African Champions again, Thanks to Rashidi Yekini and Emmanuel Amunike's double strike in the final against Zambia.
After conquering Africa, Eagles didn't rest on their oars, they went on and not only hoisted our flag in the world. They did it in grand style by beating almighty Bulgaria by three goals to nothing, defeating Greece by 2 goals to nothing while only losing by narrow margin to former world champions; Argentina and Italy.
Light fades to darkness and up again in 1996 when Bonfrere Joe took charge of Nigeria Olympic team that already conquered the world at the Japan 1993 under 17 competition. This time, there was Kanu Nwankwo, Taribo West, Wilson Oruma, Celestine Babayaro etc This means selecting the team was a herculean task because Nigeria was never lacking in talents. Again, we conquered the world at the Olympic stage and that was the pinnacle till date.
In 2013, Keshi's Eagles against all odds and all known soccer predictions conquered Africa again.Nigeria has won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1980 and 1994, and were losing finalists in 1984, 1988, 1990 and 2000. Despite this, Nigeria were not favorites coming into the tournament due to a decline in its fortunes, as a result of which Nigeria did not even qualify for the tournament in 2012. New coach Stephen Keshi had brought young, home-based players such as Sunday Mba and Godfrey Oboabona, and foreign-based players like Victor Moses, Vincent Enyeama, Emmanuel Emenike, Brown Ideye, John Obi Mikel and Uwa Elderson Echiéjilé who were crucial to Nigeria's run in the tournament.
Alas, Nigeria's growth in soccer stopped in 2013. The Eagles suddenly became a case of a child who climbed a mountain he never thought of achieving, as result his celebration for the feat stopped him from further growth. In confederation cup, the weakness of Eagles Team was badly exposed by Spain who was then the world and European champion and Uruguay who was then the South American champion. Of course confederation cup was a battle for convergence of champions and Africa couldn't fly above Europe and South America.
In 2014 world cup, below par Eagles managed a second round berth and has failed to qualify for any other competition since then. Eagles has suddenly turned the weeping child in football, Countries like Congo can now come to Nigeria and defeat the almighty Eagles. Rwanda can now defeat Nigeria and even Uganda can fly to Uyo to beat Nigeria. Nigeria's ranking in FIFA has dwindled almost beyond redemption.
The question now is, what do you think wrong with Eagles?
1)Are the glass house really doing their jobs?
2) Are the coaches below par,
3)Are the wrong set of players being invited to the team
4)Are we suddenly lacking in talents
they have lost their groove.. politics at NFF,coach favoritism, players rebel and poor treatment of past heroic footballers makes the present one not too committed! better make money at d club than die for the country who will forget u within months
