Jose Mourinho refuses to accept Hull City goal against Manchester United
Jose Mourinho claims Manchester United are “still
unbeaten”, despite suffering defeat in the second leg of their EFL Cup
semi-final against Hull City.
The Red Devils saw a sequence of 17 games without defeat come to an end on Thursday as they lost 2-1 at Premier League strugglers Hull, although the Manchester giants still progressed to the final by a 3-2 aggregate scoreline. The Tigers had opened the scoring this week through a Tom Huddlestone penalty when referee Jon Moss controversially pointed to the spot after United defender Marcos Rojo was adjudged to have pulled the shirt of Harry Maguire.
United responded through Paul Pogba, ultimately putting the game to bed and rendering Omar Baye Niasse’s late goal as only a consolation, but in a tense post-match press conference, which lasted all of 28 seconds, Mourinho refused to accept Hull’s opener as a legitimate goal.
"We didn't lose," the Portuguese tactician said. "It was 1-1. I only saw two goals. I saw a [Paul] Pogba goal and their goal, a fantastic goal.
“It was 1-1, we are still unbeaten. I think 18 matches unbeaten is amazing.
"I didn't see Hull's first goal. We celebrate, we are in the final. I don't want to speak about the penalty or the performance.
“The game was in our pocket, under our control, and something happened to open the game.
"The game was dead. The game was what we wanted it to be. I don't want to say anything else, it is enough. I am calm. I behaved on the bench. No sending off, no punishment, so no more words."
Manchester United will now face Southampton in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on February 26 after the Saints saw off Liverpool in their second-leg clash on Wednesday.
