DEADLINE DAY LATEST......
Because it’s not just Premier League sides that can squander money on deadline day, is it? So here are a few moves from the Championship to catch up on: Leeds United are understood to have signed Bournemouth midfielder Eunan O’Kane (Jack Wilshere is probably better than him, to be fair)… Blackburn have signed Scotland international and former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew on a three-year deal… Crystal Palace youngster Sullay Kaikai has joined Brentford on loan for the season… QPR have landed Pawel Wszolek on loan from Hellas Verona… Chris Martin has left the Scotland camp to discuss a move from Derby to Fulham.
17.14: SUNDERLAND EYE CITY DEFENDER
What were we saying about City loaning out everyone and anyone? Defender Jason Denayer could be the next to leave the Etihad on a temporary basis, with David Moyes keen to sign the Belgian. Although David Moyes is keen to sign anyone at the moment.
17.05: MAN CITY THE NEW CHELSEA?
After already sending Joe Hart, Samir Nasri and Wilfried Bony out on loan today, Manchester City have now shipped out Eliaquim Mangala. The centre-back has joined Valencia on loan for the rest of the season. That was £42million well spent, then.
17.00: SISSOGO?
Forget Paul Pogba, Moussa Sissoko’s departure from Newcastle has been the will-he-won’t-he transfer saga of the summer. Maybe. And reports now suggest Everton have opened talks with the Magpies in an attempt to sign the midfielder, who could cost £30million.
16.54: HIT THE ROAD (TO BOURNEMOUTH), JACK
What a signing this is for Eddie Howe. Genuinely thought they would struggle this season but signing Jack Wilshere on loan is proper. Really proper.
16.48: FIRST £20M-PLUS SIGNING OF DAY
And it’s former Bolton and Sunderland left-back Marcos Alonso, joining Chelsea for a reported £23m. Eyes watering. And David Luiz is due to have a medical at 6pm ahead of the day’s first £30m-plus signing.
Man City striker Bony joins Stoke on season-long loan
City bought Bony in January 2015 in a £28million deal but the Ivorian failed to dislodge Aguero as the club’s main striker, scoring ten goals in 46 appearances.
Before his move to Manchester, Bony had a fantastic goal record – 53 in 73 for Vitesse Arnhem and 35 in 70 for Swansea – and is a proven scorer in the Premier League.
Mark Hughes was understandably delighted to sign Bony and the former Manchester United striker expects the 27-year-old to make a big impact at the Bet365 Stadium.
“Bringing Wilfried in was a no-brainer for us to be perfectly honest, because he knows the Premier League and has scored plenty of goals at this level,” he told Stoke’s official website.
“He has power, speed and very good physical attributes which will undoubtedly help us, and his technical and finishing skills are outstanding too.
“Eighteen months ago he was being bought for a hugely significant amount of money, so we know that we are bringing in a top quality striker.
“Everybody is aware of Wilfried and what he is capable of, and it was no surprise that one of the bigger clubs came in for him on the back of his performances for Swansea – the only surprise has been that he didn’t enjoy the success with Manchester City that we all thought he would.”
Fiorentina confirm Chelsea have signed Alonso
The former Bolton defender began his career at Real Madrid and has also had a spell on loan at Sunderland.
A statement on Fiorentina’s website read: “ACF Fiorentina announces that it has sold, outright, Marcos Alonso Mendoza to Chelsea Football Club.”
Alonso’s arrival gives Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte options at the back, with the possibility of Cesar Azpilicueta switching to right-back and Branislav Ivanovic playing in the centre of defence.
The Blues are also expected to re-sign Brazil defender David Luiz, whom they sold to Paris St Germain for £50million prior to the 2014 World Cup, ahead of Wednesday’s closure of the transfer window.
Spanish full-back Alonso has signed a five-year contract, Chelsea confirmed.
He becomes the Blues’ fourth summer signing after France midfielder N’Golo Kante, Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi and Portuguese goalkeeper Eduardo.
Alonso said on chelseafc.com: “I’m very happy. It’s a step up in my career and I think this is the perfect place for me to continue developing. It’s time for me to win some titles.
“It was an easy decision for me to make when I heard the club were interested in signing me.
“My family and close friends know Chelsea is the club I have dreamed about playing for so I’m really excited about the challenge and I’m looking forward to working with my new team-mates.”
Alonso played for Bolton for three seasons, including alongside Gary Cahill, who is now one of his Chelsea team-mates.
Man City midfielder Nasri seals Sevilla loan deal
The Frenchman completed his medical on Wednesday and will spend the campaign at the La Liga side.
Nasri had struggled for game time over the last couple of seasons due to injury and form, scoring two goals in 12 appearances last season.
He had come on in City’s 3-1 victory over West Ham on Saturday, but he has failed to impress Pep Guardiola enough to be guaranteed a role in his squad moving forward.
Nasri is the third player to leave City on transfer deadline day after Wilfried Bony and Joe Hart departed.
Swansea target loan deal for West Ham’s Valencia
The Ecuador striker joined Mexican club Pachuca for £12million in 2014 and has made nearly 70 appearances for the London club.
But the 26-year-old has slipped down the Hammers’ pecking order following the summer arrivals of Simone Zaza, Ashley Fletcher and Jonathan Calleri.
Ahead of centre-back Alfie Mawson’s move from Barnsley on Tuesday, Swans boss Francesco Guidolin had declared his squad would be complete following the addition of a central defender.
But Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins raised the prospect of “one or two loans” on Tuesday night, and Press Association Sport understands Valencia has headed to south Wales for talks.
“It’s not always great to get things done last minute, but we’ll see what comes,” Jenkins told BBC Wales Sport after Swansea’s 3-0 Checkatrade Trophy defeat at AFC Wimbledon.
“We’ve done quite a lot of our business and if one or two things come our way – one or two loans to add – we would look at that.”
The arrival of Valencia would further boost a forward line which already includes Spain World Cup winner Fernando Llorente and Borja Baston.
Llorente joined from Sevilla for around £5million, while Borja made a club record £15.5million switch from Atletico Madrid but has yet to play because of injury.
Chelsea agree £32m deal to re-sign Luiz – report
Antonio Conte is desperate to add a new centre-back to bolster his ranks after the Blues were thwarted in their pursuit of Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
Chelsea are understood to have agreed a fee in the region of £32million for Luiz, who made 143 appearances for the club between 2011 and 2014.
The Brazilian left Stamford Bridge in a £50million deal two years ago but has his heart set on a return after becoming unsettled in the French capital.
The 21-year-old passed his medical on Wednesday morning after being released by Germany’s under-21s to agree personal terms with the northern Germany club.
“I’m looking forward to my time in Bremen,” Gnabry said on the Bundesliga club’s website.
“It was important for me to come to a club who could give me the chance of getting some match practice.
“The management in Bremen have worked very hard on signing me and I am sure we can achieve something here.”
Gnabry was presented at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, where he said he was convinced that Bremen can challenge in the top half of the table.
Bremen’s director of sport Frank Baumann reiterated once again that Gnabry is a Bremen player and that he has not joined them via Bayern Munich, contrary to speculation earlier in the week.
“Once again, Serge Gnabry is our player and we have bought him,” Baumann said.
“There are no agreements with any other clubs.”
Gnabry impressed at the Olympic Games this summer with six goals in as many appearances as Germany took the silver medal in Brazil.
He had not been getting a regular game for Arsenal, though, and was keen to make this move to start playing on a regular basis.
The 29-year-old has been frozen out at the Etihad Stadium after Pep Guardiola’s arrival at the club this summer.
City called him ‘a key figure in a golden age in the Club’s history’ on their official website.
Hart himself said: “Suddenly, my career has undergone a change, I took it as a sign of destiny, so I had to do something…
“The offer from Torino came at the right time, in the right way. I’m very happy to be able to test myself in a beautiful and difficult League like Serie A. Your goalkeeping tradition is recognised throughout the world, so I’m convinced I can learn a lot here at Toro.
“For that reason, I immediately accepted President Cairo’s offer with great enthusiasm. In terms of the staff, I already know Lombardo, I worked together with Attillio in Manchester and we won, we hope to relive a lot of wonderful emotions together.
“I read some interviews from Toro, the Coach [Sinisa Mihajlovic] wants humble but ambitious players – I also really like that, that’s how I want to be.”
